Who are you when nobody is around?

I'm a nobody, are you a nobody?

We live in a fast-paced, easily connected world. It has become so easy for us to be in touch with everyone and stay linked just because of the Internet. With this, we have created social groups and clusters, based on different factors, likes, dislikes, etc. It is said that a person's identity is drastically different from who they are in a group to who they are as alone, and it is true. I mean there are some good people out there who do bad things out of peer pressure and then there are some terrible people out there who do good things out of peer pressure. So really, the question is who are we when nobody is around us?

It is very easy to lose yourself when the world around you is chaotic and influencing. For a long time, I realized everyone including me, tends to do things for others. We are constantly battling with ourselves if what we are doing is right or wrong, whether is acceptable in society or not, or does it makes us look better, and so on. But here's the catch you see, nobody gives a flying f*ck. Yeah, I know (I am not talking about your nosey relatives...actually even they don't care). We think people care a lot but they don't! They really really don't! Yeah, they might care enough to compare themselves to you or vice versa but nothing more than that. Yet, it is their choice, not yours.

For the last week, I've had this internal battle in my head about the work I do or the financial status I have and there was a lot of comparison going on until I saw a man; He seemed to be a porter carrying luggage and I realized how stupid I've been. In no way am I degrading the man's status or work, what he does is certainly respectable but the point I am trying to prove is I get paid a lot probably even if both of us are working hard in our respective lives. The moral of the story is –– there will always be somebody better than you and worse than you; therefore, it doesn't matter where you stand as long as you are becoming better than yourself. This betterment generally stems from the habits, the promises, and the work you put in for yourself when nobody is looking; and it takes immense courage, will, and hard work. As I write this blog today, I am honestly reminding myself that time, patience and consistency will take you places. It is in these moments when there is nobody to hear your thoughts or when nobody is around you realize how crucial it is to be comfortable in yourself. As Dr. Jahangir (played by Shah Rukh Khan) in Dear Zindagi said, "Why does it matter what the world thinks when you know yourself?" and yes I am aware that it might take time for one to reach this stage but being faithful and aware of your own actions will only make you be present with your ownself; Consequently, your success, failures, mistakes, achievements will be yours and only yours. That'll be your karma.

So when you choose to stay true to yourself, you know what you are doing. I've heard so many people in my life being pretentious about their actions (cause unknown really) but all of us know what we are doing but some are just not aware. Oh right, let me clarify. Let's say you are doing some XYZ task, you know that you are doing that task but you may not necessarily know why you are doing it, and that makes you unaware of your actions. People of this sort have an absurd sense of delusion because they are quite ignorant of their own intentions. I am sure we all have been there and on some days we'll go through this but that's okay. Some of us will grow out of it, some just won't.

To conclude it simply - own your actions because they are simply your responsibility. That's it. That's the blog. - Written by Vanshika Patil
